About the Position

Help Lead the Community That Protects Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge.

Keālia Pond is Mauiʻs largest remaining wetland habitat and dryland forest — a refuge for endangered waterbirds like the ae’o (Hawaiian stilt) and ‘alae ke’oke’o (Hawaiian coot), habitat restoration projects for native plants, and a place where the community connects with the island’s natural and cultural heritage.

The Friends of Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge is a nonprofit partner to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and we’re looking for a new Board President to help guide that work forward.

This is an unpaid, volunteer leadership position — a chance to give back to the refuge and the Maui community while building real nonprofit leadership experience.

Time Commitment
Approximately 5 hours per month, including a monthly board meeting
Term: 2 years

What You’ll Do
As President, you’ll serve as the executive head of the Friends, working alongside a supportive board and in partnership with Refuge staff. Core responsibilities include:

– Directing and administering the organization’s affairs, in coordination with the Board
– Serving as the primary liaison between the Friends and the USFWS Refuge Manager
– Managing Friends-USFWS Partnership Agreement obligations
– Overseeing Board approval of the annual operating budget
– Develop and guide projects, with board support, to advance the mission of the refuge

– A passion for conservation and Keālia Pond
– Comfort coordinating with volunteers and community members
– Willingness to learn the basics of nonprofit finance and governance (training and board support available)
